Raška
"Raška, the place where we were born" ... Nikola Pašić
Raška, a town in Serbia that is named after the old Serbian medieval state, is located in the southwestern part of Serbia, at the confluence of the Raška and Ibar Rivers. It is mentioned for the first time as a settlement in 1835, and the final decision on the foundation of the town was made by Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević on September 17, 1845. Today’s municipality of Raška was formed in 1960. Kopaonik and Golija mountains, Jošanička Banja hot springs, monasteries and churches from the early Middle Ages, among which the Gradac, Končul, Stara and Nova Pavlica monasteries stand out, numerous natural beauties and rarities, make Raška indispensable for visitors. The tourist offer of the municipality of Raška also includes the memorial room “Raška – the wartime capital of the Kingdom of Serbia in 1915”, which represents the memory of maintenance session of the Government of the Kingdom of Serbia.
One of the town’s sights is The Stone Bridge on the Ibar River that defies time and history.
Raška is a municipality of rich cultural and artistic life. Material and spiritual culture is expressed through programs for children, lectures and panels from various fields of culture and science and arts, exhibitions, concerts, literary and theater programs that during the year bring a large audience to the Cultural Center and the Gallery. In Raška, numerous manifestations that preserve tradition and culture are held: Days of Queen Jelena, Raška Spiritual Ceremonies, Days of Milunka Savić, Fair in Raška …
Raška’s tradition rests on an inexhaustible source of folk spirit, authentic creativity, domestic handicrafts, customs and specifics of folklore. Toasts are a recognizable symbol of Raška’s hospitality. Lovers of homemade food should not miss the opportunity to try: scones, pies and prosciutto, homemade prosciutto, kajmak from Golija, veal with porcini mushrooms and chanterelles, lamb on a spit, trout in Jošanička Banja, special Kopaonik blueberry pie.
