She was celebrated as a bomber of the Drina Division of the first call, she was a fighter in the siege of Shkoder, Kolubara Battle, a bomber of the famous Second Infantry “Gvozdeni puk” of the Moravian Division and other actions. She also survived a large Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian offensive and retreat across Albania. On the Thessaloniki front, she received the rank of an infantry sergeant and was appointed as the commanding officer of the onslaught.

She showed great courage in the fighting, captured 23 Bulgarian and 20 Austrian soldiers. She was wounded nine times. Due to immense courage, the French called it “Serbian Jovanka Orleanka”. For merits in the liberation wars, for heroism worthy of admiration, Milunka Savić was decorated twelve times. She is the bearer of two military golden “Karadjordje” stars with swords, a gold medal for courage “Miloš Obilić”, two French legions of honor, Order of Courage, Albanian monuments and monuments of the Thessaloniki front. She is the only woman in the world who is decorated with the French Order “War Cross with the Golden Palm”. After the war, she was a devoted mother and foster parent to more than thirty children. Milunka Savić died on October 5, 1973. She was buried at the New Cemetery in Belgrade. In October 2013, the remains of Milunka Savić, with the highest state honors, were transferred to Aleja Velikana.
